Three Tips for Accessible Web Design

A key part of effective web design is accessibility, so we have put together this article to go over three tips to make your site more accessible.

  1. Use High Contrast Colors. One key principle of accessible web design concerns visual impairments. Many people with limited sight have a difficult time reading text if there is not sufficient contrast between the text color and the background color. To make sure your site is accessible to these users, choose colors that are far apart in both hue and value.
  1. Flag Elements in Multiple Ways. Another tip for improving the accessibility of your web design is to convey information in multiple ways. For example, don’t rely on color alone to show when a word or phrase contains a hyperlink. Instead, use a second text style element, such as underlining, to flag links. Using multiple strategies to draw attention to web elements increases the likelihood of the information being conveyed to your audience as intended.
  1. Design for Multiple Means of Interaction. The third tip for accessible web design that we’ll cover here is to never assume all users will be navigating your site using the same tools. Some users will be using a mouse; others will be browsing on their smart phones; others will be using keyboard commands; and yet others still will be using tools such as screen readers. Make sure your site is easy to navigate using all these tools.
